Learn More About Grant Applications

You've probably heard of grants in the past. Grants are money from government funds awarded to organizations that have key projects deemed to benefit the community. Despite its name, "free" grants come with strings attached -- whether in the form of obligations or sanctions in case you break any of the rules set down by your grant provider.

It can be quite tiresome applying for grants, though a lot of people may say that it's easy. Grant applications involve several steps, in addition to several considerations, all of which contribute to the approval of your application. Below are some strategies to assist you with your grant applications:

Exploration

The most important step in grant applications is to explore the options available. When you apply for a grant, nearly all grant makers require you to submit a project proposal of the program you have in mind. If your proposal has nothing to do with the objectives or goals of the foundation offering you the grant, there's a good chance your grant application won't even make it through the first stage. That is why research is incredibly important.

Research the funding interest of a foundation prior to applying for a grant. If you can, get hold of a copy of their annual report and/or their guidelines. Center your project proposal on these guidelines and make sure you have everything in order before submitting your grant application.

The Application Procedure

Each organization may have a special grant application process. Even if you already know how one foundation does it, it doesn't mean that you already know how everything works. One foundation may do it this way, while the other may handle it in a completely different style. So, for each free grant application that you submit, be sure that you familiarize yourself with the funding agency's application process.

The calendar of events, preferred method of initial contact, and other such factors are important things to know when determining a foundation's grant application process. Take note that there are some agencies that accept proposals only after an initial phone call, query letter, or pre-application form.

Accompanying Cover Letter

If you want a definite way for your grant application to attract the attention of your funding source, then you should include a cover letter in your application. The cover letter must be concise and must outline the link between your proposal and the source's interests. At least one paragraph of your cover letter should include a brief summary of your project.

Layout, etc.

The majority of grant makers would provide you with a format to follow for your grant application. Some may be very strict in enforcing their format. If a format is provided, be sure that you follow it, or risk having your grant application thrown out. Also, during your initial queries, your funding source may have provided you with precise instructions pertaining to your proposal and grant application. Make certain that you follow these instructions.

If you funding source requests any additional information, give it to them. It's difficult sometimes to meet all the requirements of a grant maker so don't be surprised if you receive a call after you submit your grant application. At any rate, that telephone call typically means that your proposal already passed the first stage of approval.
