Are you tired of trying to raise money for a good cause with car washes, bake sales, and raffles? You know, there is another technique to go about raising money.  Have you ever heard about grant money? That’s where you might obtain yours.

But to begin, what is grant money?

Grant money is funding provided by a state, federal, local group or funding offered by a private, charitable or civic organization. Frequently, the people who get free grant money are non-profit groups, such as schools, health care organizations,  arts programs, and service agencies.

There are also cases where grant money is given to help assist in or underwrite the expenses of various projects, ranging from providing food and shelter to the homeless to funding art programs to disabled adults. Grant money may also be used to underwrite the cost of computers for a classroom or certain extra costs in public libraries.

The Federal Government of the United States awards grant money every year to different individual groups with community-based projects. Congress normally allocates money every fiscal year just for these government grants.  In addition to federal grant money, state grants are also available.

But while there are government funds available, competitions throughout the application process may be tougher with different organizations countrywide competing for a grant. For this fact, it often helps if you look closer to your local area for a source of grant money. Additionally, local funding is less likely to have administrative and regulatory mandates and is usually the easiest type of grant funding to secure.

Aside from the government, there are countless other groups that offer grant money. Consider organizations in your community that raise funds for good causes, like the Rotary, Elks Club, Women’s Club, Kiwanis, and other civic or fraternal clubs. They don’t have to be impressive philanthropic celebrities or corporate groups. Any group whose agenda include doing some good for the community may consider offering you grant money if your project idea is worthy of funding.

Occasionally, grant funding is available from local businesses, especially the local branches of a national corporation such as Blue Cross Blue Shield or Wal-Mart.

To determine who in your community may be offering grant money, it’s helpful to begin by talking with people who are in a position to know. These persons are the ones who are fundraisers as a career.  Because of their background in fundraising, they can be great resources in helping you locate sources for your grant money.

Many communities currently have their own professional network of fundraising professionals. Validate to see if your own community has one of these. Getting in touch with a network may be the easiest means for you to go about seeking funds for your cause. Not only could they help you locate resources for grant money, but they can also help you with the application process by giving you with detailed reference material providing information about funding availability, grant writing, how to apply and amounts of funding that may be available.
